This paper mainly focuses on the surface modification of carbon fibers with carbonnanotubes prepared by chemical vapor deposition method. Two kinds of carbonnanotubes with curly and straight shape are prepared by adjusting parameter andcatalytic agent. The carbon nanotubes modified carbon fibers reinforced pyrolyticcarbon composites are prepared with the mechanical properties being analyzed. Two kinds of carbon nanotubes curly and straight shape were prepared by chemicalvapor deposition method using different catalytic agents. The formation process of thecatalytic agent on the surface of the carbon fibers was investigated. The morphologyand microstructure of the carbon nanotubes modified carbon fibers were analyzed.Raman analysis showed that there were obvious bands at1350cm-1and1580cm-1. Theratios of defect band to graphite band were0.352and0.351for curly carbon nanotubesand straight carbon nanotubes, respectively. The two kinds of carbon nanotubes showedgood graphitization degree. The carbon nanotubes modified carbon fibers could induce the formation ofpyrolytic carbon with rough layer and improve the interface between the carbon fiberand the pyrolytic carbon. The mechanical properties of the carbon nanotubes modified carbon fiberreinforced pyrolytic carbon composite materials greatly increased with the increasingcontent of carbon nanotubes. Comparing with the unmodified carbon fibers, the strengthand modules of the carbon nanotubes modified carbon fiber reinforced pyrolytic carboncomposites promoted82%and45%, respectively.
