Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants which areubiquitously present in the environment and potentially carcinogenic. The petrochemicalindustry is one of the important sources of PAHs pollution, discharging PAHs that consist mainlyby two and three benzene rings of which naphthalene accounting for the largest proportion. These chemical compounds mainly exist in the environmental atmosphere, getting into humanbodies mainly by respiration exposure.By simultaneously analyzing the concentration of16kinds of priority PAHs in the ambientair in the selected areas and the biomarker of PAHs in the chosen people groups, this articleanalyzes the characters of PAHs pollution in ambient air andassesses inhalation health riskofatmosphericPAHs.Besides, this article discussesthe affect of atmosphericPAHs to the internalexposure of the chosen people andthe relation between environmental pollution andcorresponding biomarkers in human bodies. The main conclutionsweregainedasfolfowing:1.It shows that the mean concentration of PAHs of research area were328~640ng/m3. Themean concentration in petrochemical area are513.5108.8ng/m3.Naphthalene is the chiefcomponent of all the samples, with the proportion of45.5-91.1%. The result of sourceapportionment shows that petroleum is the most main source in petrochemicalarea. Vehicleemission and firewood behavior arealso important source in petrochemicalarea.2.Theinhalation exposureand health risk of PAHs for rensident inpetrochemical areawere1.64E-05mg/kg·day and1.20E-06. Meanwhile, Loss of life expectancy of inhalation exposure ofPAHs in petrochemical area was743.74min.3.It is shown that the concentration of10kinds of hydroxy-PAHs in experimental groupswere:2.17(2-hydroxy naphthalene),1.27(1-hydroxy naphthalene),0.60(2+3-hydroxy fluorene),0.15(2–hydroxy phenanthrene),0.24(3-hydroxy phenanthrene),0.66(4-hydroxyphenanthrene),0.05(1+9-hydroxy phenanthrene) and0.28(1-hydroxy pyrene). The exposurelevels of OH-PAHs were relatively higher in this study, but compared to the results of otherresearches in other districts of China, the internal exposure levels of PAHs in the human bodiesare relatively lowand the proportions of hydroxy naphthalene and phenanthrene significantlyhigher in this research.1-OHP was a good biomarkers of PAHs exposure in petrochemicalenterprises area.4.The results showed that smoking and passive smoking had inflected the concentrationsand the compositions of OH-PAHs.Meanwhile, smoking and passive smoking interfere with thecorrelations of hydroxy-PAHs in urine and the PAHs in ambient air. Theconcentrations ofhydroxy-PAHs in the urine of nonsmokers are significantly correlated with the concentrations ofPAHs in the ambient air.Simultaneous detection of the concentration of10kinds hydroxy-PAHscan appropriately assess the pollution of16kinds of PAHs in the surrounding ambient air.
