Topology optimization of structure is one of the most popular issues in recentyears, which can save materials significantly and gain huge economic benefits forenterprises; more and more companies are going to use this technology to improvetheir products. Compared with other material model, the truss-like model can avoidkinds of numerical instability and get a better result with larger design space. Theproblems discussed in this paper are based on this kind of material model, theprincipal strains at every node of elements in design space is calculated by the finiteelement method, the material densities at every node are updated by the optimalcriteria, the direction of each member is updated by the direction of principal strains.Then a truss-like continue structure similar to the Michell structure is obtained.The Michell structure is a non homogeneous anisotropic continuum consist ofinfinite numbers of members with infinite thin section. Although it’s optimaltheoretically, it’s hard to implement in practical engineering, the homogeneousisotropic material is used in practical engineering. We need some methods to getdiscrete truss or uniform thickness plate with holes from the truss-like continuum,and then extract geometrical model, which can connect the conceptual design stageand detailed design stage. In the3rdchapter of this paper, a method to extract trussand number the truss is developed. First, the discrete member distribution field isextracted from the truss-like continuum, and then the truss is got from the discretemember distribution field and the truss is numbered. The examples show that themethod is valid. The uniform thickness plate is often used in practical engineering;the method to get uniform thickness plate with holes from truss-like continuum isalso developed. Some restrictions to limit the densities in a certain range are addedto the process of updating densities, and then a non homogeneous anisotropiccontinuum with holes was formed gradually. After the iteration is end, a contour lineabove specific value is drawn, and then Douglas–Peucker algorithm is used tosmooth the outline, the smooth outline will be used as the initial design of detaileddesign. In the example a cantilever subjects to a point load at the right center side is optimized. The result is smoothed, and then a Python script is used to import theresult to Abaqus to analyze.In chapter4, we discuss the development and working mechanism of the WEBbased topology optimization application. The structure of the WEB application isB/S(Browser/Server), three processes are included in the development: Matlabbusiness logical layer, middle business service layer, front interaction layer. Thefront end resides in browser is designed by Flash and programmed byActionscript3.0, the background logical processing program is developed by Java,inwhich the Matlab core program is encapsulated.
