High-strength bolt friction type connection, which has a wide range ofapplications in structural engineering, is an important connection in the form of steel. As a important parameter in high strength bolt connection, the preload is difficult tocontrol in practical engineering, which will affect the reliability of steel connections.Aiming at this, this paper conducts finite element simulation and experimental studyto find how the different preload affect the stress distribution in high strength boltgusset plate. This paper systematically discusses the theory of high-strength bolt preload, introduces the preload applied methods, theories, its relation with torque, and theexpression of maximum preload in theory.Using finite element analysis softwareworkbench to simulate the model of plate friction type with high-strength boltsconnecting, taking into account the contacting issue of each contact surface, showingthe effect of various preload stress distribution on the gusset Plate. The paper obtainsthe relationship between torque and preload for different types of high-strength boltsby tests, the tests of high strength bolt connections under different preload has alsobeen taken, to find that the test results are consistent with the finite element numericalsimulation results well. Both the results of the finite element numerical simulation and the tests showthat, the stress distribution in node plate under high-strength bolt friction typeconnection, when the preload of bolt in different location of bolt group being reduced, the stress distribution and differs a lot from the standard model, and if the preload ofany bolt tends to zero, the maximum pressure will arise by42%percents, theexistence of this difference will affect the reliability of gusset plate connections.
