Various types of mechanical seals have been used as shaft seal of most rotatingmachinery in petrochemical devices. Speed changes or pressure fluctuations may lead tofailures of mechanical seal that may cause accidents. Moreover, with prolonging of productioncycle and attention to safety and environmental protection, mechanical seal systems must runlong-period safely. To solve the problems, in addition to development of new sealingstructures, the more practical and necessary solution is creating a monitoring and intelligentcontrol systems for on-line monitoring of mechanical seal running status and control of sealworking in a best operating point.In this paper, design for on-line monitoring and intelligent control systems of mechanicalseals have been set on the basis of document analysis. The monitoring of mechanical sealrunning status has been performed, with using fit sensors, DAS, computer and peripherals anddevelopment software. Several of control models for different types of mechanical seals havebeen built based on fuzzy control, and some mathematical computations have been done. Thecontrol of closing force or opening force has been realized with software. After design,confirmatory experiments of some types of mechanical seals have been made on selfdevelopedtest-bed. The results show that on-line monitoring and intelligent control systemsof mechanical seals are feasible and effective.This paper should provide experience and tested data reference for design and furtherindustrial application of monitoring-control system of mechanical seals.
