In the architecture of current Internet, the semantic of IP addresses are overloaded. IP address is treated as not only a host's idenfitier, but also as locator. The semantic overload leads to multi-homing and mobility problem which limited the structural flexibility of Internet. In addition, the widespread adoption of traffic engineering and provider independent addresses (PI) lead to the current explosion of the Internet routing table which is known as the routing scalability problem. To solve these problems using identifier (ID) and locator (LOC) separation has been widely approved around the research community.RANGI (Routing Architecture for Next Generation Internet) which is the main research subject of National 863 Project named RANGI based ID/LOC separated. The object of RANGI is to propose a new routing and addressing scheme based the idea of ID/LOC split which is achieved by adding a new ID layer in host's network protocol stack. With the introduction of a new identity naming space, we must introduce a new mapping system for collecting, storing and resolving the ID/LOC mapping information. Therefore, how to design a large-scale mapping system based on separation of identifier and locator is the main contents of this article. In this Paper, we first describe the evolution model of the current Internet and several classic technical solutions that have been proposed. Especially we describe the mapping system used in these technical solutions and anilyse their advantages and disadvantages respectively. We also give improvements for the shortcomings of mapping system scheme with including the hierarchical design for host identity, distributed data storage and so on. Based on the above analysis and the requirement of large-scale mapping system we presents two kinds of design propose for hierarchical mapping system. We first compare two propose and then implentment one of them that satisfies our needs. Then the system is deployed in the experimental test network to be verified the design effectiveness of the scheme. Finally, we present the the deficiencies of the system and possible direction of further improvement.
