The effect of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) on system performance becomes the most important factor instead of attention, chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effect. It has been considered to be one of the main obstacles for long haul high speed optical fiber communications systems.First, a summary of the relating concepts of PMD and its statistics nature are given in chapter 2 and chapter 3, which are the fundamentals for farther discussion. Then, in chapter 4, we give a summary analysis and comparison of present main PMD mitigation methods, which include inducing the PMD coefficient, compensation technology, and choosing the different modulation formats. And in the third method, we compare the PMD tolerance range of several modulation formats which have been available in business, by using the VPI simulation tool. Next chapter 5 is the most important part of this paper, in the chapter, with introducing the techniques of the forward error correction and polarization scrambling, we present a approach for enhanced PMD mitigation by polarization scrambling and FEC. And then, we verify the method by arithmetic analysis and simulation experiment. Finally, we put forward a PMD mitigation equipment, the principle architrave of the equipment is given, and its advantage is very remarkable.
