Study On Gender Consciousness In The Typical Figure Reports Of People's Daily From 1978

This study adopts the Critical Discourse Analysis approach and Gender Perspective in order to examine Gender Consciousness in the Typical Figure Reports of People's Daily from 1978 to March,2010. The study integrate the methodology of corpus linguistics,sociology,Journalism and Communication, and adopts the research items of CDA like'proposition','appellation','transitivity'and so on to examine the gender stereotype and to reveal the different reporting mode which is base on the gender, then to get the general picture of the gender equity process and women's developments of China. This study advice that the mass media should keep true Gender Consciousness and push forward the process of gender equity and the developments of the whole society.This study includes three chapters:theoretical principle, discourse analysis, summary and proposal.Chapter 1:theoretical principle. This chapter introduces the conceptions of 'gender'and'gender stereotype', the theories of CDA and Gender Perspective. And briefly present that there are some commonalities between the two approaches on the gender issue:problem-oriented and multimethods; focusing on the language and discourse construction to the gender identity and gender culture.Chapter 2:discourse analysis.Section 1:Firstly, this part encodes people with age,politics status,occupation and so on to make quantitative analysis in order to examine the theme and bias of the typical women figure reporters of People's Daily. Secondly, analyze propositions of the reporters in order to examine the gender stereotype and reveal the highly praising to the traditional role of women in the household.Section 2:Firstly,collecting the typical figure reporters of'Vanguards of the times' column in People's Daily and analyze the 'Nouns' which refer to the family roles and "appellation" to examine the tendency of the paper in women's reporter. Secondly, make contrastive analysis of'transitivity'of men and women's reporter in 'Justice System' of the column and reveal the different reporting mode which is base on the gender.Chapter3:summary and proposal. This chapter concludes the characteristics of the Typical Figure Reports of People's Daily, and raise up the proposal that mass media and the society and also the government should pull together to advance the gender equity process and develop healthy and harmonious gender culture.
