Laser display as a new display technology, has the advantage of large color gamut and high saturation compared with the traditional display. Its color gamut coverage is close to 70% of the color that human eye can recognize, is up to 1.8 times as large as the NTSC standard color gamut.But the current display standards only support display the existing display system, can not support a wide-gamut display in laser display system. So it is necessary to establish a suitable color management system for the laser display system.The existing display standard is based on phosphor gamut. And its tricolor wavelength are different from the laser gamut. In order to properly display images on the laser display system, the color must be reduced. The color after reduction are limited in the phosphor gamut. In this case, the reproduction can not play the advantage of great color laser gamut. Therefore the color after the reproduction will require a virtual extension to fully play high saturation of laser display. The purpose of this paper is color management of the laser display system. The color management method in this paper includes specific calibration of laser display system, using three-dimensional look-up table method to achieve the characteristics of laser display system, using color gamut mapping method to achieve conversion of different devices and virtual color extension. The focuses of this paper are using three-dimensional look-up table method to achieve the characteristics of laser display system and virtual color extension algorithm. This three-dimensional look-up table is to calculate the symmetrically selected 4913 blocks of color to get the calculate value of laser display by using the color gamut mapping method, and then to build a three-dimensional look-up table. The advantage of three-dimensional look-up table is convenient to rapidly implement by the hardware. The virtual color extension algorithm proposed is to extend the calculated value of the color blocks to get the expanded value of color blocks by keeping the same hue, and then to establish a three-dimensional look-up table. The stretch methods in this paper including linear stretch, elastic stretch and section stretch is different from the method to stretch the points on the gamut boundary. The virtual color extension algorithm in this paper is to extend the whole point of the gamut to make the color uniform distribution, and overcomes color levels that the previous method leads to.The color management method and virtual color expansion algorithm are implemented through Matlab simulation to program. Large numbers of color images are experimented and the test images are analyzed in this paper. The results show that the established effective color management model achieves a normal television signal showing in the laser gamut. Meanwhile, the effective expansion of color enhances capacity of expression of color laser display system, and improves color saturation.
