It is a challenging task to develop a concurrent design CAD system for solving multiple user collaborative design problem, due to the high heterogeneity of various engineering computer tools and a wide range of distributed organizations geographically. In this pager, a web based synchronous collaborative design environment is proposed, which provides a virtual platform for geographically distributed designers to design 3D models in mechanical engineering.The system consists of three parts: presentation tier, business logic tier, and data service tier. For the presentation tier, it contains the demonstration logic in order to provide interactive function for users. As customers log in at the client-side, they can design and edit 3D entities on their own browsers, while the server-side applications as the business logic tier let the results be shown on their partners'web pages synchronously. All the new or updated entities have identification codes to record identities of their operators in the data service tier.With the system, the users can also directly create and edit 2D engineering drawings of DWG format online. All the objects in the drawing can be operated collaboratively. As a key technology, an entity-based access control mechanism is employed to settle confliction in collaborative design process.In order to design 3D objects, the paper expanded the 2D system platform into 3D field successfully, which provides a 3D modeling platform embedded in. Also, muti subjects developing and Boolean modeling were realized in this system. Finally, a brief summarization of our work and prospective plan for the future work is given.
