Based on the analysis of news coverage of the Female Peasant Immigrant Labour group in four urban newspapers in China, using the gender theory and narrative analysis, this study explores how China's urban media portrays the Female Peasant Immigrant Labour, and analyses the impact and significance of the media image representation on the social identity formation of this group and the recognition by the urban cities. The paper finds that, first of all, the issues constructed by the main media are distributed out of balance; secondly, there is deviation in the media agenda setting; thirdly, on the representation of the Female Peasant Immigrant Labour, the urban newspapers cultivate spaces for the group to express its experiences and subjectivities by producing frequent"suffering narratives"and suffering images, thus facilitate the urban members'cultural recognition of this group. On the other, they prohibit the subjectivity of this group by representing the group as"threat"and"trouble"based on their frequent"negative narratives"thus prohibited the group to be accepted by urban groups culturally.
