With the rapid development of economy and society, communications has become more and more important in our daily work and life, which is considered as the "lifeline". As an important structure of communicational field, the failure of communicational equipment will inevitably affect its normal functions. Therefore, it is of great significance for the protection of open communicational links to recognize failure rapidly and remove dangers.In this paper communication tower as an example of communications equipment structures is studied. And finite element analysis is made, including wind load static analysis, modal analysis and seismic load transient kinetic analysis. The dangerous points of the communication tower are pointed out by the analysis.The studies of communication tower damage identification are made by using neural network technology and damage detection technology based on the frequency change. Truss structure damage identification is divided into three steps. Firstly, the truss structure categories are determined by probabilistic neural network with inputting the change rate of standardized modal frequency and the change ratio of the modal frequency square. Then the position (tower layer) of the damaged truss is also determined by radical basis function neural networks with inputting the change rate of standardized modal frequency. Finally the damage degree is determined by radical basis function neural networks with inputting the change ratio of the modal frequency square.Finally, research work is summarized in this paper, expectation and assumption are put forward for further research.
