The simulating radar image of complex targets, which is based on the 3D model of the target, is produced by the electromagnetic scattering calculation to substitute real radar image. Due to the special characteristic of radar images, the project to form a database for targets recognition by entirely using real images is not only at high cost but also impossible to uncooperative targets. Therefore, using the method of simulating radar image of targets, we can simply obtain the radar images of different targets under the different imaging system parameters, and build targets recognition database at low cost.Based on the geometric model of targets, the radar simulated images are implemented by two steps. Firstly, electromagnetic scattering data of a complex target is calculated. Secondly, radar imaging is achieved using wide-band scattering data. And then the quality of simulated images is evaluated. The main contributions in this paper are as following:1. The accurate 3D model is the ground of electromagnetic scattering calculation. Three construction methods of 3D model are introduced and several facet models are built based on construction methods of facet model. Electromagnetic scattering calculation of complex targets is accomplished using software Radbase which is based on a hybrid GO/PO approach. Several factors such as frequency, angle, multiple bounces and edge diffraction which influence the electromagnetic scattering calculation on elementary configuration as ball, panel, dihedral and trihedral are mainly analyzed.2. To the problem of complex targets image simulation, the theory of rotating target imaging and some imaging algorithms are analyzed, parameters of wide-band scattering calculation and the selective method of imaging algorithms are given. At the same time, to migration through resolution cell (MTRC), we deduce a new two-dimension interpretation method used in the polar format algorithm, which can eliminate MTRC. Otherwise, we propose a resolution emendation coefficient, which can achieve the accurate simulation of image resolutions, to the resolution distortion because of window functions.3. To the simulated radar images of several targets, the evaluation of simulated radar images is proposed, and the evaluative results of simulated images are presented.
