The Research On The Magazine Spring And Autumn Of Literature And Art (1944₁949)

As one of the most popular literary journals in Shanghai, Spring and Autumn of Literature and Art was among the most enduring publications of pure art circulated in the late 1940s in Kuomintang-dominated areas. As far as literary concept is concerned, Spring and Autumn of Literature and Art put much emphasis upon the current situation, and has accumulated lots of literary works which cared about the real world. The author intends to take a detailed investigation into the history of this journal, which will undoubtedly give us some ideas about the living environment of literary journals, as well as writers; besides, as the 1940s literature weighs heavily in interpreting the ultimate direction of modern literature, and the occurrence of contemporary literature, it is of great necessity for us to have a grasp of literary works at that time.By investigating the specific living environment of this representative journal, Spring and Autumn of Literature and Art, this paper intends to study the relationships among various powers that confronted the production of literary works at that time, and the living situation and strategies of literary journals. Meanwhile, by analyzing specific works published in this journal, the author hopes to present the cultural mentality of intellectuals at a period as uncertain as that, and the living status of each social class depicted in those works.Altogether this paper consists of three chapters. The first two chapters focus on the inescapable pressure that came from political and economic situation and corresponding strategies. Chapter one takes a chronological order, and mainly focuses on the complicated political environment and living status of various journals; chapter two studies the financial support that demanded by those journals and the strategies to relieve economic pressure. By analyzing specific contents, chapter three focuses on the attention to reality and is basically an internal exploration to reveal the solicitude that embedded in literary works.
