Snow is one part of the Earth's hydrosphere. It is one of the important impact factors of global climate. As an important environmental parameters snow has been studied widely. Through getting the snow cover information timely we can predict the supply of water, floods, crop growth, estimate the loss of frozen, monitor the climate and understand the advantages for military and foreign affairs. Therefore the snow monitoring is extremely important. This study has two main aspects. One is identify the snow information using MODIS data, through NDSI. The other is discuss the feasibility of using MODIS data to retrieve the snow depth and using MODIS data establish a modal to retrieve the snow depth in Jilin Province. The followings are the main work of this paper:1)Describe the current status of snow research using remote sensing technology at home and abroad and the advantages of MODIS data in snow depth retrieval;2)Data collection and pretreatment. During the study I collected the winter MODIS data of Jilin Province and the snow depth data of some meteorological stations in Jilin Province. The snow depth data were recorded in the same day with the MODIS data was received.3)Identify the snow information. MODIS data was used to calculate the NDSI then choose a reasonable threshold of NDSI combined with state of the surface vegetation cover to identify the information of snow.4)Snow depth retrieval. Analysis the correlation between the snow depth and MODIS reflectance images. Using MODIS data establish a modal to retrieve the snow depth in Jilin Province.5)Summary of research gaps.
