Suspended particles in the atmosphere, specially small particles damage on Human health greatly, and suspended particles have serious impact on the environment, therefore,people concern about the particles in the air increasingly. Particles diameter are important for the characters of particles; the research of morphologic eigenvalue is also basic, so it is necessary to measure the shape factor and fractal of particles.Along with development of the image processing techniques and improvement of micro-observation, particle detection based on micro-observation and image processing techniques has been brought forward. Based on image processing and analysis for microscopic image of atmospheric particles, the author got the morphological characteristics of atmospheric particles.Taking atmosphere particles in Taiyuan city as object, the author sampled at three sampling points of Taiyuan in the spring of 2008 and analyzed atmospheric particulate matter pollution level and its influencing factors. The author observed the collected atmospheric particles in the laboratory through the microscope, then captured digital image of the collected atmospheric particles through microscope connected to the CCD camera. The system of particle measurement based on micro-image method is built to study the image processing. The process includes preprocessing, binarization, area-filling, morphologic, image segmentation and so on. Morphologic parameters have been brought forward: area, girth, diameter, shape factor, fractal of edge. Finally, the detected particle shape parameters of the use of mathematical statistics methods of treatment. The author dealt with morphological parameters of particles in use of statistical analysis methods. Through the analysis, we found that particle morphology has a more clear distinction because of the various source of pollutants and different levels of pollution.
