With the growing social needs of the rail transport capacity, the speed of train becomes faster and many new train models have been designed and used. These make the shortage of corresponding drivers and maintenance staff, which brought risk factors to the rail transport. Train driving simulation training system for multi-user can effectively handle the shortage. It can give drivers and maintenance staff an effective training of train driving theory and practice, shorten the training time. The most important is that train driving simulator training system can handle the operations of multi-users quckly, correctly and stably. This requests the database in the train system has a high performance.This paper as the background to train driving simulation training system which is a project of Ministry of Railways, focuses on the design and optimization of database based on drivers and maintenance staff theory training and testing system, with SQL Server 2000, gives a method of how to design and optimize a database based on relation data model. This method can be used extensively because neither specific database operations nor external running environment is included. The research steps are as follow:(1) Compares and analysises the data models at the present, then choses a suitable one for this research. Introduces the basic structure of relation data model in details.(2) Focus on three basic problems which are abnormal data, null data, query cost, impact the database performace when designing the SQL Server 2000 database, gives solutions and theories to these problems. Then, based on how to create the most suitable indexes, gives model of index choice by researching the cost of creating indexes.(3) Gives the method of designing database based on train driving simulator training system. The most importance in this chapter is the details of how to optimize the structures of tables using standardization theory, the theoretical structure of the combined entity, the father/son-type theory. Then proves the correctness of database design with the basic sql statements.
