With the expansion and diversification of Internet application, the monitoring and management of network performance are highly required. A research on the characteristics of network traffic should be of great importance to network management, planning and development. The measurement of network traffic is one of the techniques of network measurement. The monitoring and analysis of network traffic is one of the effective ways to study the characteristics of network traffic and obtain network status.First, the research background and status are given, followed by a statement of the significance of network traffic measurement. Second, we make an intensive study of the techniques and index system of the network measurement, focusing on a comparison of active and passive measurement methods. This thesis describes the detailed working process of the data analysis system. After various ways of dealing with the effective data input by traffic collective system, the data analysis system can combine the monitoring data automatically, obtain information on the changes and distributions of network. One of its most important aspects is the selection and design of the sampling methods. Based on the collection of development of time order, the present paper designs a sampling method which is able to adjust the network traffic automatically. This method can avoid the blindness and improving the effectiveness in sampling and reflects the facts on the changes of network traffic in comparative accuracy.The identification of exceptional flow is the basis and precondition of effective prevention and management of exceptional flow. It is also the main task of the exceptional flow monitoring. The thesis gives an analysis of the critical parameters, such as source address, destination address, source port, destination port, protocol type and byte number. A network traffic monitoring system based on"WinpCap"is designed and realized through a theoretical analysis of network traffic measurement. This thesis provides the detailed information about the development and operation of such a system. The design and realization of data packet capturing module and Web interface displaying module, together with their relative function bodies, are studied elaborately. Then, a description of the functions of the realized system is given.Finally, we summarize the findings of the research and look forward to the possibilities of the future researches.
