This paper discusses the methodology of applying the Natural Language Understanding System into product design processes. The paper focuses on the discussion of how to analyze and comprehend the Place Information in the user requirements which are expressed by Natural Language Understanding. And the results are conversed into the requirement of conceptual design to support the future design.First of all, this paper confirms the knowledge based methodology should be applied in the natural language understanding based product design processes, which are based on the particular features of the natural language understanding in the design domain. In addition, the ontology and theory CD theory should be applied as the primary knowledge based methodology by comparing and analyzing several semantic analysis methods. Secondly, the ontology and theory CD theory are chosen to the method based-on knowledge, through analysis and compares of several existing semantic analysis method present. Third, nouns that expression of the place which according to the semantics are sorted, analyzing the relationship between place noun and locative nouns as well as their features respectively. The methodology of understanding the place information in NLU is also introduced. Furthermore, this paper established the related knowledge library of the domain place information, complied the program applies to the domain NLU, and preliminarily realized the initially understanding of place nouns and locative nouns in the domain. Last but not least, the application of place information understanding in NLU to archetype in mechanical products design is achieved. Being programmed and debugged, with the whole system operation, after the preliminary debugging, has yielded certain results.
