The research is based on counting the number of cigarettes, which is a practical problem of Hubei Qingjiang cigarette factory production lines. A method for image recognition based on template matching has been realized. It can count the number of cigarettes automatically. The thinking of rotary code in the binary image regions is the theoretical basis for this approach.The relevant definition of the target area is the basis for the geometric definition of rotary code in the binary image regions. Filtering based on the binary image, the standard geometric template is constructed by the geometric characteristics of the target area. On the basis of the standard geometric template, the standard geometric shape matching template is constructed further. By analyzing the three geometric features of the standard shape, which are the angle, the edge and the area, the mathematical definitions and the observation point sets of various geometric features are given, so we can get the value corresponding geometric features. Rotary code evaluation criteria are based on the actual value of the rotary code in the geometric characteristics compared with the standard value of the code, come to the quantities of the geometric characteristics which the rotary coder can describe.According to the characteristics of algebraic coding theory, the basic definition of the code and the evaluation criteria of the algebraic code, it prove that rotary code in the binary image regions accord with the basic definition of the code. And on the basis of it the algebraic definition of rotary code in the binary image regions is introduced. Referring to the evaluation criteria of the algebraic code, the Hamming distance of rotary code is given as the evaluation criteria of the algebra rotary code.Regional matching operation of the rotary code, which is using the actual value of rotary coding angle, edge, adjacent area to compare with the standard values of the rotary code based on the geometric characteristics of the standard geometric template. It can identify effectively the most of the target regions by the matching strategy of the basic priority about edges and angles. The calculating the valid area of the rotary code, which is using the area of the target region to determine the target, if there have determined the scope of the size change of the target area.Based on the known rotary code, the expansion of the target regions, which is a nature of the rotary code, can get the rotary code of target regions after the diameter of it have changed. If the locations of areas for different objective are intersect, the translation of the target regions, a nature of the rotary code, can get the rotary code of target regions from the known rotary code.
