As a computing model of the 21st century, ubiquitous computing will definitely affect people's living style. It means that to provide people with many interested information whenever and wherever they are by micro computing devices collecting relative information then processing it and communicating with each other. As a tangible technology of ubiquitous computing model, wireless sensor networks have been applied in the fields of combat scouting and natural environment monitoring successfully.This dissertation firstly summarizes and analyzes the wireless sensor networks architecture, especially the key technologies of wireless sensor networks. Comparing with the existing wireless communication protocols, ZigBee communication protocol with a variety of advantages to the sensor networks background was selected. The ZigBee communication model was researched in details in the dissertation.Secondly, the wireless sensor networks hardware circuit design based on the ZigBee protocol was completed. These works include the core control module with the ultra-low power consumption MCU, wireless RF transceiver module, and a USB-COM multi-function control module port through which the sensor node can be powered, programmed and can also communicate with other devices.Thirdly, the subroutine of data acquisition and processing, read and write of EEPROM, and wireless transceiver subroutine was designed. RF module API functions which are used to control the RF module also are fulfilled. With the aspect of communication protocol, the PHY, MAC, NWK layer frame structure and the data transfer model of IEEE 802.15.4/ ZigBee standards was designed. The core algorithm of PHY, MAC and NWK layer were completed. At the same time the communication protocol API functions set were completed. It laid the foundations for the application layer software design.At last, several functions and performances of a star ZigBee personal area networks platform were tested, and it turn out to be a satisfactory result.
