A great deal of harmonics at ac side of Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) transmission lines during the operation of UHVDC transmission system must be restrained by filtering equipments.Based on the preliminary design parameters of the first UHVDC transmission system, the exchange of reactive power of ac filters design is determined through calculation and analysis. Then, traditional filter design method is improved, and a new method to select the filter parameters is proposed in order to reduce the cost of the ac filter to the minimum and accord with the restrictive conditions of standards of voltage harmonic distortion. By using the optimization method, the circuit model consisting of double-tuned filter, three-tunable filters, as well as capacitors in ac filter system is established. And five kinds of ac filter groups in rectifier station and inverter station are contrasted respectively by using genetic algorithm and programming in MATLAB. And the optimal program is elicited ,validating the correctness and practicability of the method.
