Along with the application of virtual reality technology in depth, the demand of complexity and reality of virtual scene is increasingly higher and higher, and larger than what the hardware can display at interactive rates. Thus realistic rendering of 3D terrain scenes is a challenging subject. It has two aims, which is arereality of rendering and real-time of rendering. This paper focuses on the multi-resolution LOD simplicity technology and its classical algorithm, basic principles and realization of ROAM algorithm, study of the relevant technical problems which include LOD level choice, error control, T connectivity and eliminating cracks, as well as copmparison of every algorithms. Fractal theory in simulating natural scene has a huge advantage, mainly because the fractal approach has different models that can maintain model topology, only has quite differences in the fine structure, thus it has a good anti-aliasing effect. This paper deeply study mathematical definition and property of Brownian motion, use mathematics to prove the fractal Brownian motion meet a number of property of real terrain, and fully proved that fractal Brownian motion can simulate the real terrain. And this paper puts forward based on VRML the virtual terrain scenes which is combined by the mid-point adaptive quadtree algorithm based on the fractal theory and multi-resolution terrain simplified algorithm based on quadtree data structure, takes a series of optimization measures, such as eliminating cracks, texture mapping to improve the real-time and reality of the virtual scene rendering, and promotes the virtual campus building of North University of China.
