With the expansion of services offered over the Internet and the increase of the requirement of the network bandwidth, people imminently need a new access technology to solve the "last mile" bottleneck problems. FTTH is one of the final solutions of Optical access network. Because of its concision, cheapness and reliable topology structure, PON, this has two mainstream technologies: EPON and GPON, is considered to the final solution of FTTH. The problem that whether EPON or GPON be the leading solution of FTTH is an argumentative problem of the world.Because FTTH network is integrated access platform, including support for voice, data, video, green, and other services and applications, it has the need for different services and applications for a variety of service quality guarantee. So the technical problems relative of quality of service, such as operating and maintenance, network measurement and flow control technology to the quality of services, in EPON and GPON System are becoming major selected factor to the operators. OAM of EPON and GPON is the key technologies relatated to operating and maintenance. Interoperability testing of EPON and GPON is not only an important basis of the network measurement, but also the major qualification for operators to measure the overall performance of the network. The network bandwidth utilization is not only the major measurement of parameters in all measurement system, but also an important system parameters and measurement controversy of EPON and GPON system. The discussions of the key technologies of OAM, interoperability and bandwidth utilization in EPON and GPON system is very important.In this paper, it does research and analyses compared key technologies in the EPON and GPON. With analysing and comparing the EPON solution and GPON solution of FTTH with combination FTTH concrete realization of requests, the paper gives suggestion of operator choice of EPON or GPON. In conjunction with the operator's market development strategy, the paper puts forward the idea of intelligent edge of EPON and GPON system, and shows the future of the two systems to intelligent development prospects.The main contents of this paper are as following:1. Comparative analyzing key technologies of OAM, interoperability and bandwidth utilization in EPON and GPON system. By doing research in OAM, the exchange process, operational and cost of FTTH, comprehensive analyzing the merits of EPON solution and GPON solution for FTTH.2. By summarizing the comparative analysis of key technologies and FTTH solution, and considering various economic development of the country's real situation, giving selective conclusions of EPON solution or GPON solution of FTTH to operators and proving it through concrete examples of countries. Considering the development strategy of operators, suggesting the prospects of EPON and GPON should be concentrated on the flow control technology and intelligent equipment.
