With rapid growth of modern communications, the single channel transmission capacity of existing optical fiber network has been gradually filled. It is an effective way to resolve this problem by adopting dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) technology. And the application of dense wavelength-division multiplexing technology must depend on the development of all kinds of wavelength-division multiplexing devices. Arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) with low inter-loss, low crosstalk between channels, stable, easy to integration and easy to coupling with fiber, is regarded the best choice for DWDM network, plays an important role in optical fiber communication.In this thesis the theory, optimization and design of AWG are researched. The optimization and design include parameter optimization and design, domain optimization and design, some methods to improve these high-powered AWG. First in parameter optimization and design, the method of parameter optimization and design are researched detailedly and effectively, the parameter of AWG is also obtained. And then domain optimization is analyzed, geometry modeling is used, and the dimension of arrayed waveguide is calculated, and the dimension of AWG is47.62mmx 16.50mm. Then some methods that improve these high-powered AWG are given.
