WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) is a technology, which combines computer network and wireless communication system. With the rapid development of wireless communication technology, WLAN is used more and more widely. With the promulgation of several WLAN criterions, it is significative to design WLAN antennas which meet the requirements of WLAN criterions. The task of this paper is to design two antennas which are used for WLAN IEEE802.11a criterion and IEEE802.11g criterion, respectively.Based on WLAN criterion, WLAN antenna should be miniaturization, broadband and dual-band. DRA (dielectric resonator antenna) and microstrip antenna both are small size, light weight, few cost, effortless integration, and are easy to achieve antennas' miniaturization, broadband and dual-band, so they are very suitable for WLAN applications. Based on abroad reference of domestic and overseas literatures, a lot of analysis and simulation to microstrip antennas and DRA have been carried out. A compact wideband coplanar-waveguide-fed dielectric resonator antenna loaded with a L metallic strip is proposed for WLAN IEEE802.1 la. A dual-band microstrip antenna with a U-slot on the patch and loaded with double shorted posts is proposed for IEEE802.1 lg. The bandwidth of the DRA is increased by using coplanar-waveguide inductive slot, and the size of the DRA is reduced by loading a L metallic strip on the DR. Dual-band of the microstrip is realized by loading a U-slot on the patch, and the bandwidth is increased by using the double shorted posts. Analysis approaches for both antennas are given in the paper. With the help of Ansoft HFSS10, good results can be obtained by further optimization. And the antenna is fabricated and tested. The results show that the simulation results agree with the tested results very well. The antennas meet the demands of WLAN criterions.
