With the quickly development to Internet and broadband communication technologies, devices and traffic is increasing dramatically in Internet. The switch and router are foremost interconnected devices. In this thesis we will research the architecture of large-capacity switch, switching fabric and forwarding technology.Nowadays, multi-bus and shared memory backplane are being replaced by much faster switched backplane that allow multiple packets to be transferred simultaneously. After that, the system-level architecture of a large-capacity switch with 128×128 1.0625Gb/s serial data rates is proposed in this thesis. Next, the Implementation of line-card and composing modules of backplane on large-capacity switch are described.This thesis has mainly studied the Clos structure, and two-stage structure can be constructed by folding the third-stage module in the Clos structure. We have accomplished the design of the 128×128 multistage interconnection network by the two-stage structure. Having combined transmission capability of optics and logic processing capability of electronics, optical interconnect technology is fully appropriate for switching nodes in wide band and high speed backbone telecommunication networks. Consequently, we will design the switching backplane by optical interconnect.Then, we probe into the building of the physical platform of line-card. It involves the device characteristics and relevant configuration of physical layer chip, FPGA and serial backplane transceiver. After introducing the basic concepts and architectures, the author focuses on the design and implementation of FPGA on line-card, and the related timing simulation are introduced in details. Finally, We debug and analyze the circuit of switch line-card,and present the further scheme about the project.
