As the development of the optoelectronic technology,tapered optic fiber is widely used in medicine ,near-field optical microscope, soliton communication, moreover, it can be as imaging device by fusing to fiber optic tapers. Its properties and application has been paid more attention. At present, there are still some questions unsolved in the ray transmission and the energy distribution of the tapered optic fiber whether in the theory or in the experiment. so it will be necessary to study the properties of the tapered fiber device which can not only help to improve the performance of the tapered fiber device, but also promote the development of the fiber device.Through the investigation and comparison on domestic and international and of different tapered optical fiber technology, this article includes the following segments:1. The basic concept and classification of fiber are introduced; the development of fiber technology and application in the field of communication, medical are described.2. A detailed comprehension was gained on the wave and ray theory of the fiber optics.3. The structure of the tapered fiber was introduced and mainly discussing the properties of the tapered fiber, such as transmission, coupling, polarization.4. Based on light ray theory the transmission property of the tapered fiber end on different tapered angle is analyzed. The tapered end aperture angle versus the tapered angle and the tapered end radiation angle versus the tapered angle are obtained through the analysis.5. In the experiment, according to the theory analysis tapered fibers of different angle are fabricated by means of melting and pulling the end of optical fiber. A system is designed to test the specially tapered optical fiber. Results show that tapered end aperture angle of the tapered fiber which is fabricated according to theory is about 4 times than the ordinary fiber end. So it can be used for optical fiber medical science, such as photodynamic therapy in need of wide-angle to the first optical fiber, can also be used to improve the coupling efficiency with the LD. The results of these studies optimize the design of the tapered fiber and practical application provides an important basis for.
