With the rapid popularization of the Internet, the people's demand of network bandwidth is ever increasing. There is no doubt that it has unparalleled advantage with fiber transmission. After years of development, long-distance optical backbone network with fiber communications has extended all over the world. At the same time, the bandwidth of the access network become bottlenecks, and began to the era of optical communications. With passive optical network (PON)'s appearance, it play an increasingly important role in the optical fiber access networks because of its savings resources and transparent agreement on network protocol. Ethernet passive optical networks (EPON) integrate Ethernet and PON. It's becoming a hot field of optical fiber access networks with both the advantage of Ethernet and PON.Without comprehensive network management software, any network including EPON network can not operate stably. Topology management is an indispensable part of the network. Good network topology graph can reflect the network organizational structure and operation status. So, the EPON network topology is particularly important to the EPON network management.Based on the author's research project—"EPON network management system", this thesis introduces the design and realization of EPON NMS topology discovery detailedly. In theoretical research, this article analyses and discusses central technology, including network management, the theory of EPON and the algorithm of topology discovery. According to practical application, this thesis brings forward a rapid and effective topology discovery algorithm. In practical application, this paper gives the core design and implement of the entire topology subsystems in conjunction with specific EPON NMS project needs and Software Engineering, including the detailed design, realization of core modules and operation results. Practically, this system can discover the EPON topology rapidly and display the visual network system performance and alarms information.
