The technique of image vectorization is widely used in the field of science and engineering, such as recognition of engineering blueprint, image compression and transmission and so on. The technique is proposed and researched for decades. However, because of its complexity, the performance of these algorithms have their limitations. There is still a plenty of work to do in this area.This paper focuses on image vectorization, present the basic research and application of this technique, as well as the image pre-processing and vecorization algorithms. Based on above, my work is put on two aspects: firstly, this paper proposed a practical image vectorization algorithm for embroidery machine, and a semi-automatic embroidering algorithm is suggested depending on it. Secondly, a set of vector graphics editing software is implemented by Visual C++ 6.0.Color image vectorization algorithms include three procedures: (1) marking of image district. (2) recognizing and extracting of image contours. (3) smoothing and vectoring of image contours. It is proved to be effective and has been successfully used in semi-automatic embroidering.The editing software is used to handling the data of Qing River contour lines with functions of displaying, scaling, deleting, editing and other operations. It have an advantage of both user-friendly and multifunction.
