Research On Open Source Software In The Integrated Library System

At the end of 20th Century, a revolutionary open source software (OSS) movement was springed up widely around the world. This OSS movement was aimed at sharing knowledge and technical innovation, and which was based on the ideas that software should be open to everyone. So OSS is favored by more and more people, and the success of Linux Operation System gradually made OSS approached to the public domain.OSS depends on the open source community and their collaboration, and emphasizes the freedom to use software, which are consistent with the main idea of the library management. So some experts and scholars in the library of the world agree with the development and the use of library OSS. Some experts even point out that OSS is the core technology of library evolution in the age of Web 2.0 and provides a new choice for the library's system construction. But critics and doubt have been coming forth during the spread of OSS in the library field. What is the difference among the OSS,commercial software,freedom software,free software and public software? What can library benefit from the new pattern? What kind of OSS about the library has been developed presently? And how do these software work, whether can they satisfy with the library needs? What attitude has the nation and international institution? Can OSS substitute the commercial software? All of them are the problems that must be settled before OSS popularized in the library.Integrated library system (ILS) is an important element of the modern library construction, and it's more possible to be affected by OSS. So the paper is based on the ILS construction, and clues on a good many issues presented in the ILS. In this paper, the author firstly focuses on discussing and analyzing the application basis of Open Source ILS from the view of market,economy,technical pattern and trade standard, etc. It clearly proposed that OSS is a new opportunity for the ILS evolution, and that it's not a new concept but a new way to change the ILS existent mode of the development and maintenance, thereby solving many issues consisted in the exploitation process of the ILS. Secondly, through the investigation and assement of the living Open Source ILS, the paper has some cases researched amply, hence providing practice evidence for the libraries. And finally, the paper proposes the pertinent strategies on the OSS spread in the libraries based on the reality of our country.The paper includes summary and straight matter (totaled eight chapters) .The summary has a general treatise about the international actuality of the OSS in libraries.Chapter one and chapter two are the foundation of the whole paper, and it mainly expounds the basis of OSS and ILS, and discusses the affiliations between the OSS and libraries.The next three chapters, including chapter three,chapter four and chapter five discuss and analyze the application basis of Open Source ILS respectively from the view of market,,technical pattern and trade standard.Chapter six opens out the whole circs overseas across-the-board, based on the investigation on the living open source ILS, and makes use of the OSMM model to analyze the maturity of the selected open source ILS, thereby providing practice gist for the effective choice of libraries.Chapter 7 proposes the integral thinking on the evolution of OSS and tables a proposal based on the reality of our country.The last chapter is a summary of the whole paper, and mainly introduces the future research work.
