The explosive growth of multimedia data in large-scale informationrepositories such as digital library (DL) and Web poses new challenges toconventional multimedia information retrieval technologies. A typical DLfeatures a huge amount of heterogeneous data and a large number ofnon-expert users. Therefore, a retrieval tool that supports semantic-levelqueries and a variety of multimedia data types is highly desirable in thecontext of DL, which is however beyond the capability of the up-to-datemultimedia retrieval technologies. The work presented in this paper extendsboth the depth and broadness of the conventional multimedia retrievalresearch by a proposed key technique for DL: semantics-based image retrievaland organization. These techniques provide critical building blocks forretrieval facilities in DLs or similar information repositories.
