Objective: To understand the academic level, present situation and characteristics of Acta Nutrimenta Sinica and find out shortcomings for enhancing the academic quality.Methord: Literature review, mathematic statistics, general induction, bibliometrics, logical reasoning and comparative analysis were applied to examine the number of articles published, citation amount, citation language, citation type, support from foundations, authors, h index, immediacy index and self citing rate from 1996 to 2005. The status of cited articles was analyzed from 1981 to 2005. The impact factor (IF) and the frequency of citations were compared with those in Chinese journals of preventive medicine and hygiene and The Journal of Nutrition published by American Society for Nutrition. Results: (1) The number of articles increased dramatically since 2004. (2) The total number of references was 9702 and the average number of per article was 8.89. The number of English references was 1.3 times of Chinese references. The articles cited from scientific research journals were 82.7% of the total and followed by monographs (15.6%), showing that the authors pay attention to the new trends of scientific researches both domestically and abroad, especially the international advanced achievements. (3) The number of articles supported by foundations was high, about 76.9%. (4) 96.9% of articles were written in cooperation. The average number of authors per article was about 4.17, higher than which was reported by Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China. Universities and colleges were the institution where most articles were reported, so they were the important bases of nutrition research in China. The geographical distributions of authors were from 30 provinces. 59.7% of the first authors were senior research fellows and doctoral candidates (postdoctoral fellows). 47.0% of the first authors were 31 to 40 years old. The distributions of first, cooperative and whole authors accords with Latka's law. By Price law, 58 authors were core authors who published 3 or more than papers in Acta Nutrimenta Sinica. (5) 2086 papers had been published from 1981 to 2005, and 1781 papers were cited, meanly 85.4%. The totle number of citation from 1981 to 2005 was 12058 and the average cited number per article was 6.77. The cited half-life was 10.95 in 2005. (6) The impact factor and citation frequency increased yearly, but with larger fluctuation, possibly duo to longer cited half-life and never reaching the peak of cited within two years. The lower immediacy index and self-citing rate revealed that the cited of articles in the year of publication was few and self -citing was also scanty. Though the impact factor and citation frequency ranked in the front of Chinese journal of preventive medicine and hygiene, but far from those of The Journal of Nutrition. Besides the cause of language, it revealed our nutrition research inferior to the advanced countries in general. Conclusion: Acta Nutrimenta Sinica is an important journal on nutriology and has its own style. The articles published reflect the new developments of nutrition research in China. Its academic quality was steadily improved. With the advance of nutriology , Acta Nutrimenta Sinica will meat opportunity of its development and progress.
