As a new ship navigation system and assisted decision-making system, the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is playing a more and more important role in the navigation area. It can not only display the information of the normal ocean chart, but also provide the information related with navigation. With the integration of AIS information, it provides alarming and navigation service to avoid danger. However, most ECDIS systems are based on some special platforms. Transform the ECDIS system from one platform to another needs a lot of redesign and modifications. With the development of navigation system and the extension of the ECDIS display information, an ECDIS which can be run in different platforms is definitely necessary.Firstly, the theory and methods of the RUP software development, the unified model language (UML) and the technique of the cross-platform are introduced. With respect to the developing of our system, a mini-type RUP developing process is designed.Secondly, based on the understanding of lots of literature and products related to this area, the properties of the ECDIS functions are obtained and simply analyzed, and a system model is given according to these.Thirdly, the platform independent system analysis and design are performed with the RUP method. According to the system function modeling, the analysis of ocean chart data model and character model is given. The basic classes can then be extracted and some examples for these classes are given. The framework of the system, detailed design for the basic classes, component plan and deployment design are performed.Finally, the implementation of system with the key technology (Qt) and main functions are presented, including chart display, chart layer, chart calculation, chart part zoom, chart selection and so on.
