Technology and application of FTTH is developing rapidly. It has become one of the hot technology in the world. I participated in the FTTH project of Beijing Telecom. Our work includes solution, testing and implementation in laboratory and field test. This paper roots in business projects of China telecom.The paper first introduces Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON). It summarizes the current FTTx technology, standards, principle, the key technical and advantage.The paper focuses on EPON application in access network. First, It analyzes the existing network solution in commercial building. Because the existing network structure is complexity, not manageable. It needs fixed room for the equipment installed and the cost is high. The paper puts forward EPON application in commercial buildings and compares the user EPON access network solution, operations, economic and other areas. It comparies EPON and SDH,ADSL fiber modem etc. Paper summarizes EPON application in commercial buildings mode and analyses how to solve the problem of existing network structure in commercial buildings. Paper also simply analyses the application mode in residential communities, the cost of EPON or ADSL, LAN are almost the same, but the system efficiency has been improved. So it must be appropriately developed.Next paper summarizes the further design elements in the process of implementing, and explains the building address, the distance from the project of OLT, ODN, ONU. Paper cites successful application cases and experience in Beijing. The summary is helpful for the practical application.To verify EPON access network is feasible, I participated in the study of single EPON system interoperability test of Beijing Telecom. It describes test environment, programs and the results. The contents of the tests includes EPON and MSTP interoperability testing, Internet access tests, IAD interoperability testing which is the NGN equipment. It provides a reference and the foundation of EPON application in commercial buildings.Finally, it establishes the business forecast model of EPON based on the foreign development rule of EPON.With the price of fiber and EPON equipment falling and development of technology, the advatanges of EPON's high performance will be increasingly obvious .In the future,fiber access will become the main means of access. My model forecasts that EPON users will reach 1.3 million in 2007, 3.7 million in 2008, 8 million in 2009.Fiber access network access is the development trend of access network. At present, EPON technology has gradually matured, the costs have been declining and its functions have been ameliorated. EPON have been widely used in domestic and abroad. EPON technology will be more and more usable.
