CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexin g) system as a economical and practical WDM system has gained immense popularity in the transmission network application. CWDM can be applied to mid- and short distance transmission network and MAN (Metropolitan Area Network), also can be applied to the Metropolitan Core Network in small and medium-sized cities.It has good prospect in the practical application .First, this paper has outlined the IP net and the SDH transmission technology and their new progress , has comparison to each kind of technology, analyzed necessity and importance for WDM technology. Then study the market background of the WDM, includeing the basic characteristics and technical developments of the WDM in WAN. Also studied and compared the technical characteristic and application range between CWDM and DWDM. This paper is aimed chiefly at the study of the main principle and function for point to point optical fiber transmission system in MAN and mid- and short distance transmission network, as well as related hardware design, system realization. Show the CWDM applications through the actual engineering design and testing results. Finally, the author presents integrated network programs of SDH over CWDM and IP over CWDM, and forecasts the trends of the CWDM .This paper put forward an bandwidth solutions to CWDM application which has better economical efficiency.This studies combined with project design and implementatio. CWDM provided transmission capacity to SDH, IP etc . It consumed optical fiber were reduced. CWDM has a strong applicability and broad market prospects for the country's elecommunications network, so the study is practicality.
