The United States has the world's most developed Newsweek. The three major news weekly "Time", "Newsweek" and "U.S. News And World Report" enjoys a worldwide reputation. Chinese periodicals market is the world's fastest growing developing market, in which Newsweek is one of the varieties that grow the fastest. With China's entry into the WTO, the American magazine industry gradually finds its way into the Chinese market; Chinese Newsweek has the opportunity to spread world widely. In this context, it is particularly necessary to conduct comparative studies between Chinese and U.S. Newsweek magazine.Through the contrast of Chinese and US Newsweek, this paper tries to analyze the current development of Chinese news weekly from the perspective of the report characteristics objectively and comprehensively and find out the weaknesses and shortcomings that restrict the development of Chinese Newsweek. Then the author attempts to draw on the successful experience of U.S. Newsweek and conduct exploratory research on the prospects of Chinese Newsweek, finally put forward the proposals for Chinese Newsweek to stand firm in the fierce market competition. This paper is divided into four chapters:The first chapter elaborates the definition of Newsweek and summarizes the characteristics of Newsweek. The author sums up the development process of Chinese and US Newsweek from the economic and cultural perspectives.The second chapter analyzes the background, audience orientation and report characteristics of the two most representative news weekly, namely, "Time" in the United States and "China Newsweek" in China and conduct comparative studies in each aspect. The author mainly focuses on the empirical analysis and comparative study of the two Newsweeks' report characteristics.Chapter IIIof comparison, the author sums up the following conclusion: the use of survey reports has made China Newsweek occupy a pivotal position in Chinese news media; the use of a large number of news photos is in line with China's national conditions and the original meaning of Newsweek; the orientation of China Newsweek reflects the need of Chinese current middle-class audiences. Moreover, the demand of this group is increasing, which has provided a better environment for the development of China Newsweek. However, some problems also exist: political and commercial restriction coexist; the magazine issuance becomes the bottleneck of supply and demand; the lack of innovative design on the cover and the press photo makes it difficult to attract audiences; the explanatory report in China Newsweek has not yet formed its own characteristics and lacks a large number of factual materials as a support, therefore, it is less convincing; China Newsweek reports has small social effects. It lacks the report of dominant opinions and some news reports have weaker value.Chapter IV is the conclusion part. Through the analysis of China Newsweek's problems and opportunities and drawing on the experience of US Newsweek, the author puts forward corresponding proposals on the future development strategies and coping strategies of China Newsweek.
