Cluster system is mainly consisting of node and communication system. In this paper, cluster node hardware architecture contains processor architecture, chip link architecture and I/O bus architecture and cluster communication system have hardware-based construction using user level communication (ULN) technology. For the design and implementation of cluster communication system based on different node hardware architecture, the key point is the promise for the user level communication ability for cluster communication system, which provides high bandwidth and low latency performance, can provide hardware resources for upper applications and operates memory and bus independently.According to the requests from Virtual Interface Architecture (VIA) for hardware resource mapping and memory operating, with the characteristics of address space and data space of IA-64 processor architecture, this paper gives a simple and efficient method for address conversion and data expression and provides a design that can keep the general description and specific implementation uniform on each VIA layer. Finally, based on IA-64 processor architecture and self-made hardware, this paper makes a VIA implementation THVIA with works on data structure, memory and resource calling, etc. By software configuration and hardware adjustment, this paper also makes THVIA designs and implementations based on VIA C3 chip link architecture and PCI-X bus architecture. Performance results show that the implementation of THVIA based on IA-64 processor architecture and PCI-X bus architecture has high performance with 6.1μs min latency for 8 bytes, 220 MB/s max bandwidth and 2-3μs software overhead.According to the development of cluster node hardware architecture for multicore processor, integrated chip function and serial I/O bus, this paper analysis their influence on cluster communication system and provides a new design of cluster communication system in hardware and software, which has simple on-chip strategy, smart architecture and broad using range.
