License Plate Recognition System Based On TMS320DM642 Chip

License Plate Recognition System is an important technology with development of computer vision. It was first applied in the field of Intelligent Transportation System. With the great improvement of our life, the LPRS is used more and more popular in our daily life. It begins to be used in industrial areas, residential areas, schools, hospitals etc. to do vehicle management. Embedded DSP LPRS has advantages in size, weight, power consumption and image processing comparing with PC LPRS. This paper gives us a solution of a LPRS based on TMS320DM642 chip.This paper presents the hardware system including TMS320DM642 chip, storage structure, video encoder SAA7115H, video decoder SAA7105E and Ethernet interface. Then we present a LPR algorithm used in our system. We use texture and color component double positioning methods to improve positioning results thus enhancing the rate of success in the algorithm. After that, this paper gives us a solution to build a multi-thread LPR software on the hardware we present before. And also we build PC software to manage the results got from DSP system. This paper also present some methods on system optimization, system debugging, and system boot loading. We propose the use of improved malloc, free memory function to monitor memory. We present a network communication protocol to makes it with data fault tolerance. And according to our hardware system, we present a method to loading procedures larger than 1M bytes when starting from Flash.Using the methods we mentioned above, our LPR system has it's recognition speed less than 0.75s and the recognition success rate of over 94%.This paper gives a brief description about the strong sides and the weak sides of system. And we expert some future work in our research at the end.
