Recent years, both researches on Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR) and simulation of Chinese Ink-Wash Painting have made great achievements. So it has cry for bringing the art simulation of Chinese Ink-Wash Painting into 3D rendering area to catch up with the steps of the art simulation research of western paintings. The research on Chinese Ink-Wash Painting styled 3D rendering has far-reaching significance and many potential applications both in science and on the artistic aspect.Based on the theories of traditional 3D rendering pipeline and typical 3D Non-Photorealistic Rendering model, a novel Chinese Ink-Wash Painting styled 3D rendering model is proposed. It has the essence of Chinese Painting skills in mind and is of great flexibility and extendability. It is composed of four parts: fetching characteristic information, layered rendering model, diffusion model and color model.Referring to the research results of the silhouettes-centered 3D non-photorealistic rendering approaches and related works, the characteristic information that is needed to be fetched from the scene for Chinese Painting styled rendering is concluded to four kinds: silhouettes, texture lines, center lines and Chinese Painting color information. Characteristic information provides the overall useful data which is needed for rendering.Layered rendering model is the keystone of the whole rendering model.Based on the observation and conclusion of a majority of Chinese Painting composition skills, this paper designed the core mechanisms of the rendering model to be component-based rendering and layered rendering. The two mechanisms can be expressed as following: The object model can be divided into several components, and each component is rendered by several renderers, and the rendering results are finally composed. Silhouette renderer, color renderer and many other renderers are proposed to simulate various composition skills in Chinese Painting. The stroke-based renderers must be drawn by virtual hairbrush, which is composed of brush model and brush-style model. The stroke is drawn by the brush model which is controlled by the brush-style model.In order to simulation the diffusion effect of Chinese Painting, a physical paper model and diffusion simulation model is adopted to take the diffusing task.In order to simulate the colored Chinese Painting, particles (including ink particle, pigment particle and water particle) are taken as the middle result of rendering and diffusing. So a color model is put forward to convert the middle result to final display. The color model is based on KM color model.The experiment results indicate that our model has successfully realized Chinese Ink-Wash Painting styled rendering of 3D models, the various brush styles, ink styles, color styles and composition skills. A flexible and configurable rendering has been achieved.
