Along with the popularization of network application and continual increase of users, it's a very important issue for us to use the network bandwidth rationally and improve the quality and reliability of network service. Load balancing is a common solution to address these issues. The dissertation is interested in the load balancing of SOCKS VPN. After a brief overview of SOCKS VPN system and load balancing technology, we study and analyze the load balancing of SOCKS VPN from two aspects: the bandwidth of physical transmission link and the performance of the server. Then feasible schemes and realizations are presented for multi-path and multi-server load balancing. In order to implement multi-path load balancing, we first compare the difference between IP policy routing and traditional routing technology. Then we focus on the IP policy routing technology in Linux. Combining the features of the existing SOCKS VPN system, we improve the redirector system of SOCKS VPN and achieved multi-path load balancing. As well, we carry on some testing work. The scheme solves the problem effectively for those who connect to the Internet with more than one path. For multi-server load balancing, the paper presents the research of LVS, an open-source Linux cluster server. After analysis and comparison of the three IP load balancing technology of LVS: VS/NAT, VS/TUN, VS/DR, we implement multi-server load balancing via VS/NAT and VS/DR.
