H.264/AVC is the latest video compression standard of the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group and ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group. It employs many innovative technologies such as multiple reference frame, variable block size motion estimation, in-loop deblocking filter, and context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC). H.264/AVC can save up to 50% bit-rate compared to MPEG4 under the same video quality. Among these new methods, CABAC is considered a significant revolution. CABAC is more efficient than traditional entropy coding.CABAC adopts arithmetic coding method that is acknowledged most significant entropy coding, and compared to used widely CAVLC, it can enhance 10%~15% data compression efficiency. However, because of the complexity of this algorithmic, the decode speed of circuit is unacceptable and the demand of reference data is extremely large, so it is difficult to implement in circuit.
