Embedded real-time OS is widely used in important devices of network such as high performance routers. According to the research of China's 863 plan "The basic platform and experiment system for terabit scalable high performance IPv4/v6 routers", this paper analyses the difficulty in design and researches the key technology in implementation of the embedded processor card. Based on the realization of the hardware and the design of the BSP (Board support package) of the VxWorks, this paper gives a design of the functional embedded processor card, which is suit for high performance router with good generalization.The main work can be outlined as following:Do analyze and research the configuration methods and download requirement of many types FPGAs in Terabit router, describe a design to configure FPGA through embedded processor card. This design fits for different scale FPGAs which belong to different factory. Its unique remote configuration function simplifies the router's debugging process and cuts down the costs.To solve some problems in embedded processor card application by using the traditional method to configure MAC address and IP address, a dynamic configuration method is proposed. Through this method, address can be configured flexibly and resources will be used efficiently.Do bring forward the design of a common used embedded processor card based on above researches. It can be used in line cards, forwarding engine and switch fabric modules in Terabit router. Embedded processor card provides the information access to different modules and central processor, manages and controls these modules, maintains the routing table. For hardware part, it uses Motorola MPC860 as processor. The outer devices are composed of memory, Ethernet port, serial port and reset controlling modules etc. Designs of each module are presented in detail. For software part, this paper analyzes VxWorks boot sequence and gives the BSP's design according to hardware's framework.
