Along with the rapid development of the optical communication system with big capability and long distance, the research on Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is paid more and more attention on. The successful development of EDFA promotes the fiber communication system to evolve to the whole-optical transmission. Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) as the plus medium is the key component of EDFA.This thesis analyses the physics character and amplify principle, and introduces the common fabrication technics. A novel fabrication technics based on the MCVD and liquid intermingle method about Erbium-doped fiber is putted forward according to the analysis. Quartz tube is melted and shrunk with high temperature before depositing loose layer, in order to minish the radius of the tube. And Erbium-doped fiber preform is fabricated using this method.The refractive index profile of the fabricated Erbium-doped fiber preform is measured and analyzed with the P104 Optical Fiber Preform Analysis, which is manufactured with YORK Corp., and the cut-off wavelength of the Erbium-doped fiber is predicted. Erbium-doped fiber preform fabricated with the method researched in this thesis compares to Erbium-doped fiber preform fabricated with the normal method, and the refractive index profiles of the two preforms are basically the same. It shows the researched fabrication method of Erbium-doped fiber preform is feasible in technics, and the fabricated preform satisfies the qualification of pump light single mode transmission.The advantage of the Erbium-doped fiber preform researched in this thesis is it reduced facture cycle and saved intermingle liquor about 58 percents. The research has important reference value to the research and development of Erbium-doped fiber.
