In order to break through the bottle limitation of the electronic switches to net capacity-upgrading in modern communication systems, optical switches are widely investigated. The electronic-controlling optical switches initially studied are commercially obtained now. The switch properties do not meet the requirement of future all optical network. So the optic-controlling optical switches, ie. all optical switches, are the focus of the researchers. One of the very important reasons that baffle the development of all optical switches is high switch power. A ring resonator coupled to one arm of Mach-Zehnder Interferometer is proposed by Heebner. It can decrease the switch power. And the ring resonator is studied widely. The influence of losses for several kinds of ring-resonator all optical switches is analyzed in this thesis. The circulating field is very large when the incident light is resonant with the ring, so very small losses can make distinct influence. The electronic field intensity is calculated using iterative method. And it makes us clear with the instantaneous field intensity. Influence of losses for single-coupler ring resonator is calculated. Single-coupler ring resonator can only make phase shift when losses is negligible. When losses is matching with the reflectivity, Single-coupler ring resonator becomes 1×1 switch. The calculated results tally well with Lipson's experimental results. Two kinds of 2×2 ring-resonator all-optical switches, ring-resonator-coupled Mach-Zehnder Interferometer and double-coupler ring resonator, are present in this thesis. And the principles of these two switches are analyzed. Influences of losses are also considered. Very small losses can make the switch unworkable. We can insert an optical amplifier into the ring resonator to compensate the losses. For fiber ring resonator EDFA can be used; for integration waveguide SOA can be used. The gain must just compensate losses. Large gain also make the switch unworkable.
