Design of cluster file system is very important for building a general-purpose cluster with commodity components. To provide scalable high I/O performance needed in the scientific computing, engineering computing, Internet/Intranet services, I/O intensive commercial database and multimedia application, we designed a high-performance cluster file system named COSMOS for Dawning-2000, the typical superserver built by clustering commodity workstations. This thesis introduces the basic infrastructure of the Dawning 2000 cluster system. We discussed the basic characteristics of the COSMOS file system and its implementation.COSMOS file system provides location transparency and strict Unix semantics. It guarantees user-level binary compatibility with general Unix file system, and is designed to be a scalable system. No bottleneck of centralized server is introduced. All data, including metadata and directory files, is dispersed into the whole system to provide high performance and scalability. It utilizes the serverless architecture and cooperative cache to improve performance. Striped storage is implemented to provide collective bandwidth. COSMOS is a typical cluster file system. It provides a high-performance platform to users and for future research.Several groups of testing are performed. The performance of the COSMOS file system is evaluated on the platform of Dawning/2000 superserver, using standard I/O performance benchmarks. Our tests show...
