Because of its higher storage density, faster data transfer rates and less random access times, volume holographic storage has been of interest for many years. We examine the holographic data storage system from storage material, photoelectric devices, optical imaging system, coding technologies, control system etc. perspectives.For storage materials: Ce:Fe doped lithium niobate crystals are growed and processed. We also make benefic investigation into inorganic photorefractive ploymer. For photoelectric devices: Spatial light modulator(SLM) and CMOS camera are choiced by inquiry. Optics used in holographic data storage system is studied in detail. For Optical imaging system: Imaging matching of SLM and CMOS camera is examined. For coding technology: Reed-Solomon error correct coding, 6:8 balanced modulation coding and data interleaving are discussed. Meanwile, corresponding programma is developed. For control system: we introduce a novel control system for volume holographic data storage from the aspects of both hardware structure and software realization. Dual-head video card, double monitor and video-splitter are adopted to control the spatial light modulator(SLM). The CCD camera is controled through IEEE 1394 interface. Based on Linux platform, the software for encoding, decoding and hardware control is developed, with object-oriented programming language C++, adopting many excellent program libraries and class libraries such as rscode, Xlib, Iibdc1394, wxSerial, pthreads, blitz++, wxWidgets etc..Eventually, we build a complete storage system. Coding image storaging is researched, and our best storage result is the coding image that use 8×8 pixels of SLM standing for one data bit. In addition, fiber's application to holographic data storage system is investigated.
