This article tries to illustrate the transition of TV essay—the best medium ofvisual image and character, through a process which transforms from alanguage-based culture (character-centered) to an image-based culture (visualimage-centered). During this transition, a mixed genre emerged out of the competitionbetween the character and the image. At its early stage, the reflection of TV essay wasthe phenomenon of bad illustration, that was to convert the text to blunt visual imagesunskillfully. During that time, the TV essay was a type of televised essay, whoseemphasis was still on the text. Dialogue started between them when the character andimage couldn't out-compete each other. The author of the TV essay could useaudio-visual language smoothly, free from the restraint of the characters, to completethe task of expressing contents and emotions. At this stage, the image and character ofthe TV essay both served their purposes well then. As the dialogue between thecharacter and the image continued, it was found that they could complement eachother, so the blending between them deepened. During this period, the author of theTV essay learned to draw in elements of other form of TV programs to explore theapproach of narration which combined the images and text. At this time, the TV essaywas a type of TV program in the form of essay, whose emphasis fell on TV. Thetransition of the relationship between the image and character has great enlighteningimportance to study the the development and exploration of the TV essay during ourtime which features visual arts.
