Doppler Weather Radar, an effective instrument of surveiling the meso-scale and micro-scale disastrous weather systems, can be used to detect the severe storm systems and to make the weather forecast.This paper introduces the structure and evolvement of storm cells, the environment condition for storm development, the category of storm and radar echo character of the severe storm systerms, educes the evidence of storm algorithm. Then the storm identification algorithm is introduced in detail, consulting the technology of WSR-88D. The algorithm uses multiple thresholds of reflectivity and the technique of cell nucleus extraction, to improve the identification of linear storm or storms clustered together. Processes of close storms are also used to avoid crowd display of products and bad dissatisfactory tracking effect.We designed the algorithm with Visual C++6.0 advanced program language,based on the Doppler weather radar second product development platform(MiniRPG) , who uses uniform base data form (VTB) and product data form, andmakes for the future development and cooperation. We provide the software to themain system in the form of Dynamic Linked Library.Using the observation data of July 8th, 2004, Anhui Province to test the module, we compare our products with the products of Build 10.8 of METSTAR. Results show that the module works well in storm cell identification and warnings.Finally, the quality and limitations of the module of storm identification are discussed, and the subsequent task and future developments are put forward.
