SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is a computer based producing control and dispatching automation system. It can monitor and control the running devices at the scene, and finish many functions: data acquisition, device control, measure, parameter adjusting, alarm etc.SCADA system plays an important role in dispatch automation of power system. Its front-end processor ( FEP ) includes many software and hardware from modem to front-end computer in dispatching center. FEP is the key component for data communication between SCADA servers and remote substations and power plants, so its performance must be very high.The front-end system'kernel task is communication. It links remote power-plants, substations and SCADA server. There are four key techniques in front-end system:1. MODEM Matrix & NPort-server forms a communication dispatching center.2. Plug-in components in com can introduce new protocol in front-end system easily.3. multi threads in one process advance the abilities of dealing with data.4. Double hot backup devices run in load balance state.First this paper analyses the communication between the front-end system and RTU (Rmote Terminal Unit), and the communication between front-end system and back-end system, including their architecture, principles, message format. Second, it discusses the main function of front-end system. Some methods are presented, which are adopted in this system to improve its performance. Finally, a private front-end system is given.
